Dr. Jay E. Adams is our lead faculty member and, as Dean of the Institute, oversees the entire curriculum. Dr. Adams is well known as the father of the modern Biblical counseling movement which began in 1970 with the publication of his book, Competent to Counsel. He is the founder and former Dean of the Institute of Pastoral Studies at the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF). He was a founder of the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (NANC) and is a member of the association's Academy and Board of Directors. Dr. Adams received his B.D. degree at Reformed Episcopal Seminary, a B.A. Degree at Johns Hopkins University, did graduate work at Pittsburgh-Xenia Seminary, and finished his Masters in Sacred Theology at Temple University. He earned the Ph. D. degree in Speech at the University of Missouri.
Dr. Adams served as the pastor of several churches in the Northeast and as the Executive Secretary of Home Missions for the Bible Presbyterian Church. He has served on the faculty of Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and as the Director of Advanced Study at Westminster Seminary West in California. In 1992 he left academia and became the founding pastor of the Harrison Bridge Road Presbyterian Church in Simpsonville, SC from which he retired in 1998. Dr. Adams is a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award granted by the State of South Carolina.
Dr. Adams has written over 100 books dealing with biblical counseling, homiletics, and other issues of importance to the Biblically oriented pastor. Dr. Adams is now retired from active ministry and is unable to travel. He continues to write and teach locally and serves as the editor of the Journal of Modern Ministry. Dr. Adams and his wife Betty Jane have four children, a dog named Bentley, and a cat named Molly.
Rev. Donn R. Arms is a native of Waterloo, Iowa where his dad helped build John Deere Tractors. He attended Faith Baptist Bible College in Iowa (B.A.), Northwest Baptist Seminary in Tacoma, Washington (M.A.B.S.) and is working toward the Dr. of Pastoral Theology degree at Bob Jones University. He is a Fellow with NANC and is an Emergency Medical Technician. Donn has pastored churches in Iowa and Florida and now has an active counseling and speaking ministry. He is married to a trophy wife (Sandy) who is a manager with Publix grocery stores. Donn and Sandy have been married 34 years and have four children (so far) and three exceedingly precocious grandchildren. The Arms also have a dog and a cat.
Rev. Bill Slattery is the founding Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (ARP) in Moore, S.C. and serves as the Dean of Redeemer Biblical Counseling Training Institute (RBCTI), our local training institute here in South Carolina. He is a graduate of Liberty University (B.A.), Westminster Theological Seminary in California (M. Div.), and is a member of NANC. Bill is a seasoned and experienced counselor and teacher. He is married to Jay and Betty Jane Adams' daughter Heather and has four children who are fortunate enough to live a stone's throw from their grandparents!
Robert Smith, M.D. is a retired physician who lives in Lafayette, Indiana. Dr. Smith has been a leader in the biblical counseling movement for many years. He is a co-founder, along with the late Bill Goode, of the Faith Baptist Counseling Ministries, a Fellow and a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors, and the author of the Christian Counselor's Medical Desk Reference (Timeless Texts). Dr. Smith and his wife Leona have four grown children.
Martha Peace is a former nursing instructor, a member of NANC, and best selling author of several books including The Excellent Wife and the recently published Damsels in Distress. She and her husband Sanford live in Peachtree, Georgia. They have two grown children and ten grandchildren.
