If speaking words were the same as producing the thing we speak, we’d all be in trouble.
Think of saying, “hogwash,” for instance—imagine what would appear! If you said, “thing-a-ma-gig,” who knows what would show up? Get the point?
If we thought that when we said something, it would happen, we’d all be more careful of our words—right?
Well, listen to Jesus on the subject of words:
I tell you that on judgment day people will have to give an account for every careless word that they speak.
On the positive side, try this:
The righteous person’s mouth sprouts with wisdom.
And, for good measure, here’s a double whammy:
There is a kind of careless speaking that is like sword thrusts, but the tongue of wise men heals.
What if you really saw people who were being dammed because you said “Damn you” to them? What if you saw people actually blessed when you said “Bless you?”
Well, thankfully, words don’t produce things, but they can get you into a lot of trouble, now or later. Or they can really help. So, Christian, why not begin to think more carefully about the words you speak?
